Updates on Haiti relief efforts

Communications Team - Tuesday, January 26, 2010

PROJECT C.U.R.E. is working together with the U.S. Military Southern Command, Catholic Relief Services, Partners in Health, and other humanitarian organizations onsite in Haiti to deliver desperately needed medical relief to quake survivors in Haiti. By Jan. 31, the organization will have delivered at least six loads to Haiti. The value of materials delivered currently exceeds $1 million.

  1. The first Haiti load left PROJECT C.U.R.E. Nashville on Friday, Jan. 15, on its way to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba where it was shuttled to the U.S.S. Comfort and transported to onsite medical aid groups in Haiti. This load was sponsored by Newmont Mining Corporation.
  2. The second load of PROJECT C.U.R.E. medical relief left Denver via American Airlines on Monday, Jan. 18, from which it was flown to Miami and transferred to Catholic Relief Services for the organization’s workers in Haiti. This load was sponsored by MillerCoors.
  3. A third load left Denver via American Airlines on Monday, Jan. 18. Materials were received and distributed by the U.S. Military’s Southern Command to various aid organizations.
  4. A fourth contingent of supplies traveled from PROJECT C.U.R.E.’s distribution center in Nashville to Norfolk, Va., where it was joined with the U.S.S. Sacagawea (a dry cargo ship) to be distributed by the U.S. Southern Command to various aid organizations.
  5. Leaving Phoenix on Jan. 26 is a load destined for Opa-locka, Fla., from which a private charter will transport it to Port-au-Prince on Jan. 30, to be distributed to Partners in Health (PIH). PIH is operating the large Hôpital de l'Université d'état d'Haiti (HUEH), or University Hospital, in the capitol city.
  6. PROJECT C.U.R.E. is currently preparing a sixth load, comprised of first aid and hygiene supplies donated by community members, to leave Denver on Wednesday, Jan. 27 en route to Miami, then to Haiti for the U.S. Southern Command to distribute.

In addition to dispatching aid as described above, PROJECT C.U.R.E. will continue to work with various governmental, nonprofit, and business partners to deliver additional loads of medical relief supplies to Haitians in this urgent time of need and for many years to come.

PROJECT C.U.R.E.’s efforts to deliver assistance to Haiti for earthquake relief would not be possible without the support of hundreds of individuals, companies, and organizations who have donated time, supplies, and money. PROJECT C.U.R.E. thanks all of these people for their contributions.

Each “load” represents 800-900 cartons (boxes) of goods. The monetary value of the loads varies.

Talking Books Plus organizes aid for Haiti

Communications Team - Monday, January 25, 2010

After receiving an e-mail from PROJECT C.U.R.E. a week ago regarding the Haiti earthquake, and what individuals could do to help, Don Huck started making plans to make a difference. Mr. Huck, who is the owner of Talking Books Plus in Littleton, Colo., maintains a personal connection with PROJECT C.U.R.E. through two of the organization's angel ambassadors - Dr. Merl and Barbara Jacobsen - who have been customers at the store since 2006.

Upon learning of the needs in Haiti, Talking Books Plus spread the word to its customer base, who number more than 300 in Denver and the surrounding mountain area. The store's customer base had one thing in common - their love of audio books. Now they have another reason for sharing - opening their hearts and wallets to contribute to a donations drive for PROJECT C.U.R.E.

So far the store has collected more than $700 in first aid and home medical supplies that will be taken to PROJECT C.U.R.E. for delivery to Haiti.

Talking Books Plus will also donate a percentage of gross sales taken in from January 14 through February 14, 2010, to help with the costs of delivering the supplies to Haitians in this time of need. Join Talking Books Plus and make a donation online today.

Help for Haiti

Communications Team - Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Just prior to the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12, a PROJECT C.U.R.E. container full of medical supplies and equipment was approaching port, awaiting delivery to its final destination in Léogâne. Various supplies in the container will be instrumental with disaster relief, including gloves, dressings and suture kits, syringes, and an anesthesia machine. However, following closure of the port, the steam ship transporting the container has been diverted.

It is estimated that as many as three million people may have been affected by the quake, and the death toll may reach into the thousands. Haitians, most of whom already live on less than $2 a day, have to contend with the strongest earthquake the region has seen in more than 200 years.

Newmont Mining Corporation has committed to sponsor PROJECT C.U.R.E.'s delivery of two disaster-relief containers. Employees will volunteer to load the containers, which will hold bandages and dressings, syringes, some anesthesia supplies, crutches, and other supplies helpful for emergency situations.

Your donations will help PROJECT C.U.R.E. deliver much-needed medical relief to Haiti. PROJECT C.U.R.E. is currently working to organize collections of supplies and equipment at various locations in its four distribution center cities - Denver, Phoenix, Nashville, and Houston. A list of requested items is below.

You can also donate online to help fund the delivery of supplies to people in need in Haiti. Donate now. Select "2010 Haiti Earthquake Relief" from the fund designation menu or type in "Haiti" in the fund designation text box.

  • Band-Aids
  • Gauze
