Newmont Presents Project C.U.R.E. Medical Equipment to Hospitals in Ghana

Tuesday, December 28, 2010

Source: Ghana News Agency

Abirim (E/R), Dec. 16, GNA - The Newmont Golden Ridge Akyem Project, a mining company based in Abirim, has presented medical equipment worth 400,000 dollars to the New Abirem Government Hospital.

Some of the items will be given to the Holy Family Hospital, Nkawkaw, Oda Government Hospital and three other health centres within the catchments area of the Akyem Project at Afosu, Adausena and Ntronang.

The items included gloves, oxygen masks and tubing, respiratory supplies, suction catheters and gloves, scrub brushes and skin prep sets, anaesthesia, resuscitators, chest tubes and drainage units, autoclave, steam desktop sterilizers and oxygen concentrators.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, told the youth of the district not to abandon agriculture because of mining.

He urged business men and women in the district to pool their resources together and enter into partnership with others to invest in low cost houses to rent them out to the expected 10,000 workers who would come to the district when mining starts.

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo thanked Newmont Akyem Project for the equipment that would enable the hospital to be upgraded.

He directed the district assembly to build a wall around the Abirim Senior High School to ensure the safety of the students with the influx of the expected large number of workers to the mines.

Mr Felix Apoh, Community Development Manager of Newmont Akyem Project, said the items were donated by Project CURE, a non-governmental organization based in Denver, US, which is the largest donor of medical supplies in the world.

Mr Apoh said in addition to the medical supplies, the company was building four-unit nurses’ quarters for nurses who would be working at the hospital.

The District Chief Executive, Mr Napoleon Amoako-Assiamah, said the District Assembly and Zoomlion had agreed to build a final disposal site for liquid and solid waste in the district.

The chief of Abirem, Nana Akwasi Amoh Kyeretwi I, appealed to the company to respect their promise to pay contract works within 30 days and urged the company to take a second look at their requirement that contractors of the company should have some years experience since that would end up in exclusion of the local contractors.

Helping Haiti

Wednesday, August 25, 2010

When a magnitude 7 earthquake struck Haiti on January 12, 2010, it left unthinkable devastation in its wake. More than 230,000 people lost their lives; an estimated 280,000 homes and businesses were demolished; and approximately 1.5 million people (equivalent to the entire population of Philadelphia) had nowhere to turn but overcrowded displacement camps.

Since the earthquake, PROJECT C.U.R.E. has delivered more than $6 million worth of medical supplies to Haiti. Thanks to the help of our partners on the ground - Department of Defense, Catholic Relief Services, Partners in Health, International Relief and Development, and several Haitian hospitals - these supplies were immediately mobilized and provided care to an estimated 324,000 hurting and injured people.

PROJECT C.U.R.E. is committed to rebuilding efforts and continues to provide medical supplies and equipment to our partners and Haitian hospitals as they become rehabilitated. You can help with these relief efforts by making a donation to PROJECT C.U.R.E. to help fund the delivery of desperately needed medical supplies.

Together, we can Deliver Health and Hope to Haiti.

First PROJECT C.U.R.E. container to Kosovo arrives

Monday, March 29, 2010

PROJECT C.U.R.E. has learned of the safe arrival of a container of medical supplies and equipment to Podujeva, Kosovo. Thanks to the extensive support network of the container’s sponsor, Team Kosova, the process of delivering the container to first-time recipient Podujeva Main Family Medical Center went very smoothly.

From the main facility, the contents of the container will be distributed to more than 20 other government clinics in the Podujeva district.

In Kosovo, one of the poorest countries in Europe, hospitals and clinics have very little funding, and patients often have to provide everything that will be used for their care (bandages, medications, etc.).  Facilities are typically small and sparsely furnished.

PROJECT C.U.R.E.’s delivery contained an X-ray unit and emergency room monitors. Dozens of boxes of patient care supplies (bandages, disinfectants, etc.) were also provided. These items were identified during the needs assessment as the Podujeva medical facilities’ greatest needs.

Special thanks to John and Ruth Chestnut of Team Kosova, who sponsored the needs assessment and arranged the funding for the container.
The Rotary Club of Prishtina, Kosovo’s capitol, has expressed interest in providing support for the shipment of another container in the future.
